5 Top Tips for Making an Application to a School in the United Kingdom
Follow these top tips when navigating the UK application system!
So you are thinking about studying in the United Kingdom? There are a whole host of benefits to studying overseas, from meeting new friends from all corners of the globe to the potentially huge financial savings. One of the first differences you will notice in applying to universities overseas is the application process itself. Follow these top tips when navigating the UK application system.
- 1. Familiarise yourself with UCAS
Most undergraduate, and some postgraduate, courses will require you to make an application through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, better known as UCAS. The application system may be very different to what you are used to but don’t let this put you off studying your dream degree in the UK. You’ll find lots of tips and advice on how to complete the application on the UCAS website.
- 2. Perfect your Personal Statement
You will probably be more familiar with the term ‘essay’ than personal statement. Although both are essentially a personal reflection on your motivations to study and future aspirations, a personal statement should have a less narrative structure. Check the UCAS website for useful worksheets to help structure your statement.
- 3. Research Universities and Courses
Many universities in the UK offer the same course. On the surface it may appear that you will be studying the same course, just at a different campus, and graduating from a different university. However, take a look at the detailed course information, and these can suddenly seem worlds apart. Make sure you know what you are applying for by researching your classes in the ‘Module Information’ section of course webpages.
- 4. Deadlines
With so much focus on your high school work, you can easily miss UK university application deadlines, especially if they do not coincide with your domestic university ones. As soon as you decide you want to apply to study in the UK, visit the UCAS website and make a note of the upcoming dates. If you miss a deadline, contact your chosen university immediately and explain that you wish to submit an application, as there may be alternative ways to submit one.
- 5. Go off the Beaten Track
Search social media and forums to learn from students who are going or have recently been through the university application process. It can be reassuring to know that you are not alone navigating a new country’s application systems. You can also find tips from students who can ponder “…if only I’d known that!” Always remember to use caution when seeking advice off the beaten track!
